Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether, which is widely used in building materials, especially in dry-mixed materials such as mortar and plaster. As an efficient functional additive, HPMC can not only improve the construction performance of the material, but also improve its overall quality and durability.

1. Enhance water retention
One of the most prominent functions of HPMC is to significantly improve the water retention capacity of mortar. During the mortar construction process, the cement hydration reaction requires sufficient water support. If the water is lost too early, the cement hydration will be incomplete, thereby reducing the strength and adhesion of the mortar. HPMC has excellent water absorption, expansion and film-forming properties, and can form a layer of evenly distributed mesh structure in the mortar, effectively locking in water, delaying water evaporation, and giving the cement enough time to complete the hydration process.
Especially under high temperature dry or water-absorbent base conditions, the water retention function of HPMC is particularly critical. It can prevent the occurrence of "burning mortar", that is, the base layer quickly absorbs the water in the mortar, resulting in a decrease in adhesion. Good water retention also helps to reduce the risk of quality problems such as cracking, powdering, and hollowing during construction.
2. Improve construction and workability
Constructionability is an important indicator for measuring mortar performance, and HPMC performs well in improving mortar construction. After adding HPMC, the consistency and thickness of the mortar are significantly improved, and it is smoother and easier to apply during construction, and the surface is more uniform, which is conducive to reducing construction difficulty and improving work efficiency.
HPMC has a certain lubricating effect, which can reduce the friction between the mortar and the construction tools or the base layer, making the mortar easier to spread and compact. For mechanical spray mortar, HPMC can also provide good pumping performance, ensure the stability of the material during pumping, and reduce pipe blockage.
3. Improve bonding performance
In plaster products, HPMC can also improve its bonding with the base layer. After forming a film, HPMC can act as a bridge between the base surface and the mortar, enhancing the mutual adhesion, thereby reducing the problems of mortar shedding and hollowing. This is especially important for occasions such as tile adhesive, plastering leveling and exterior wall insulation mortar.
4. Enhance anti-sagging performance
In vertical construction such as wall plastering and tile pasting, anti-sagging performance is a key factor in measuring whether the mortar has good construction properties. HPMC can improve the thixotropy of the mortar, that is, it has a good consistency when standing still and is not easy to sag, but becomes smooth and easy to operate during mixing or construction. By controlling the type and amount of HPMC added, the mortar can maintain an appropriate thickness without sagging during vertical surface construction, improving construction efficiency and aesthetics.
5. Improve opening time and adjustment time
HPMC has a significant effect on extending the "open time" and "adjustable time" of the mortar. The open time refers to the time window in which the mortar maintains its bonding properties after construction, while the adjustable time refers to the time allowed for moderate movement and adjustment after laying materials (such as tiles). By extending these times, HPMC can provide construction workers with more adequate adjustment time, reduce construction errors, and improve construction flexibility.
6. Improve mortar stability
In dry-mixed mortar, components are prone to segregation and sedimentation due to different densities, affecting product uniformity. HPMC can increase the viscosity of the system and prevent particle sedimentation through its thickening and rheological regulation effects, thereby improving the homogeneity and stability of the mortar and ensuring consistent construction results.

7. Adaptability and environmental protection
HPMC is a modified cellulose from natural sources that does not contain harmful ingredients and is in line with the development direction of modern green building materials. It has good compatibility with a variety of mortar formulas and is suitable for cement-based, gypsum-based, lime-based and other types of mortar products.
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) plays an indispensable role in mortar plaster, covering water retention, construction, adhesion, anti-sagging, stability and other aspects. It not only improves material performance, but also provides construction workers with a better working experience. It is an irreplaceable and important additive in modern dry-mixed mortar. With the development of green buildings and high-performance building materials, the demand and performance requirements for HPMC are also constantly increasing, and its application prospects in the field of building mortar are broad.
