Analysis of the application of hydroxyethyl cellulose in oil drilling

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic water-soluble polymer with excellent thickening, water retention, stability and lubrication properties. In oil drilling projects, the performance of drilling fluid, completion fluid and fracturing fluid plays a vital role in drilling efficiency and well wall stability. As an important additive for drilling fluid, HEC has been widely used in the field of oil drilling.

Basic characteristics of hydroxyethyl cellulose

1. Good water solubility: HEC can be quickly dissolved in cold or hot water to form a transparent viscous solution, which is convenient for on-site construction.

2. Thickening and rheological adjustment ability: HEC can significantly increase the viscosity and thixotropy of drilling fluid, enhance the rock carrying capacity of drilling fluid, help carry drill cuttings, and improve drilling efficiency.

3. Excellent salt-soluble stability: HEC can still maintain good solubility and stability under high mineralization conditions, and is suitable for marine drilling and high-salinity formations.

Good lubricity: HEC can reduce the friction coefficient of drilling fluid, reduce the wear of drill bit and well wall, and extend the service life of equipment.

4. Temperature and shear resistance: HEC can still maintain stable viscosity under high temperature and high shear conditions, and is suitable for deep well and ultra-deep well drilling environment.

Application of hydroxyethyl cellulose in oil drilling

1. Drilling fluid thickener

During the drilling process, drilling fluid is used to cool the drill bit, lubricate the drill pipe, carry cuttings and stabilize the well wall. The thickening effect of HEC can increase the viscosity and carrying capacity of the drilling fluid, so that it can effectively suspend and transport the cuttings, prevent them from being deposited at the bottom of the well or in the pipeline, and affect the drilling efficiency. In addition, the thickening performance of HEC can also improve the shear thinning characteristics of the drilling fluid and enhance the wellbore cleaning ability.

2. Completion fluid and cementing fluid additives

Completion fluid is used to protect and stabilize the well wall to ensure the smooth progress of subsequent oil and gas production. HEC can be used as a thickener for completion fluid to provide appropriate viscosity, improve suspension ability, and prevent well wall collapse. During the cementing process, HEC's excellent adhesion helps to evenly distribute cement slurry, improve cementing quality, enhance the stability of cementing layers, and reduce fluid leakage.

3. Fracturing fluid modifier

Hydraulic fracturing is a common measure to increase production and injection. Fracturing fluid is used to create artificial fractures and increase the permeability of oil and gas wells. As a thickener for fracturing fluid, HEC can improve rheological properties, increase the ductility and sand carrying capacity of fractures, and ensure the fracturing effect. In addition, HEC's good water solubility enables it to be easily degraded in the later gel breaking process without causing formation damage, which is conducive to improving the production capacity of oil and gas wells.

4. Fluid loss reducer

During drilling operations, drilling fluid loss control is crucial to prevent wellbore instability and mud cake formation. HEC can effectively reduce the amount of drilling fluid loss, reduce the penetration of fluid into the formation, prevent wellbore collapse, and improve the safety and stability of drilling operations. Especially in high permeability formations, HEC's fluid loss control effect is particularly significant, which helps maintain wellbore integrity.

5. Application in offshore drilling and high-salt formations

During offshore drilling and high-salt formation drilling, drilling fluids need to have good salt and calcium resistance. HEC can still maintain good solubility and stability in a high-mineralization environment, which can effectively improve the salt resistance of drilling fluids and prevent drilling fluid failure. In addition, the biodegradability of HEC also makes it a preferred additive for environmentally friendly drilling fluids.

Hydroxyethyl cellulose plays an important role in the field of oil drilling due to its excellent thickening, filtration reduction, lubrication and stability. As a key additive for drilling fluids, completion fluids and fracturing fluids, HEC can improve the rheological properties of drilling fluids, reduce filtration, enhance rock carrying capacity, and adapt to complex environments such as high salt, high temperature and high shear. In the future development of oil drilling technology, the application prospects of HEC will be broader, especially in the research and application of green and environmentally friendly drilling fluids, HEC is expected to become a more important functional material.
